Quinn Ewers debut grades
Grade: D
Ewers toiled amid a pour of Bears defenders, missing the target on the vast majority of throws he delivered on Sunday afternoon.
Ewers took the reins of the offense from Zach Wilson partway through the third frame. He proceeded to miss five of his first six pass attempts and cough up the ball on the goal line, setting up a Chicago score.
It set the stage for a sour showcase for the Texas alum, whose typical brand of efficiency went the way of the Dodo bird in the Windy City — at least for a fleeting moment.
Quinn Ewers debut stats
- Completions/attempts: 5/19
- Passing yards: 91
- Sacks: 2
- Fumbles lost: 2
Ewers’ final line tells much of the story of his maiden preseason appearance. He struggled to find his markers against Chicago’s second- and third-stringers, seeing effort after effort carom off the earth.
The Dolphins afforded their rookie gunslinger plenty of opportunities to let go of the rock; he tallied 18 pass attempts in just a quarter and a half of work. Nevertheless, Ewers’ throws were largely unruly, evading his pass-catchers’ grasp.
Then, there were the fumbles. One Ewers miscue on the goal line set up a Chicago score. Another on the final drive nearly facilitated a Bears’ game-winner.
Ewers has plenty of time to overcome his dour showing atop Soldier Field’s glint pasture. But he’ll need to show far more accuracy on his throws to do so.
