Buffalo Bills' quarterback Josh Allen praised New England Patriots' quarterback Drake Maye earlier this offseason for being super talented, but when compared to the Bills' quarterback, Maye had a humble response.

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye had an up-and-down rookie season but showed promise down the stretch. However, Maye did not have a lot of help around him and was constantly under pressure in 2024.
The Patriots' rookie finished with a 3-9 record, throwing for 2,276 yards and 15 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. However, those numbers are similar to the rookie-season numbers of another former top quarterback pick in the AFC.
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen finished his rookie season with a 5-6 record, throwing 2,074 yards and 10 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. After seven years in the NFL, Allen is a three-time Pro-Bowler and MVP winner.
Earlier this offseason, Allen had high praise for the Maye, calling him "super talented," and one of his "favorite young quarterbacks in the league." Maye has a long way to go, but his first year in the NFL was comparable, if not better, than the former MVPs.

Today, Maye reportedly “outdueled” Jayden Daniels (Commanders QB) at their joint practice together.

However, Maye joined the "Bussin' With The Boys" podcast earlier this week, and although he respected and appreciated Allen's praise, he was quick to downplay the comparison.
“He’s the MVP. …I’ve got a lot of work to do to even be in the same stratosphere as Josh. Luckily, he’s in the division, so we have some good matchups I’m looking forward to," Maye said. "But really, comparisons, I’m just trying to be myself and at the end of the day, if some people think that, that’s a lot of respect for him. But, I got a lot of work to do for that.”
The comparison isn't far-fetched, though. Maye was drafted third overall by the Patriots in 2024, and Allen was drafted seventh overall by the Bills in 2018. Maye is 6-foot-4, and 225 pounds, while Allen is an inch taller and 237 pounds.
They are both dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks who can take on members of the secondary in the run game. Allen has run for over 4,000 yards in his seven years in the NFL and ran for 631 yards and eight touchdowns in his rookie season. Maye rushed for 421 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie year.
However, in North Carolina, Maye ran for over 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns in his final two years combined. Allen, at Wyoming, ran for 727 yards and 12 touchdowns in his last two years of college.
It's awfully early to make comparisons between the Patriots' second-year quarterback, and the Bills three-time Pro Bowl quarterback, but the two players' size, running ability, and first year in the NFL are very similar. Maye has a lot of work ahead of him, and there's many other team factors involved, but his rookie season was a strong start to what could be a special career ahead.
