Packers' $4M former backup QB, 86-TD college star, in danger of losing final roster spot

The Green Bay Packers are set to start the preseason on Saturday night. For one QB it may just be the last chance to win a job in the NFL.

The Packers have their established starter in quarterback Jordan Love. After spending years behind Aaron Rodgers, Love is now the face of the franchise, and the team's success this season will depend heavily on his performance.

“It’s Jordan Love time. Only one offensive player on the roster (two-time Pro Bowl guard Elgton Jenkins), and three players in total, predate the quarterback’s time with the team. He’s on a top-of-market deal, so the onus is on him to start lifting his teammates rather than the other way around. The roster’s still solid, but competitions at left tackle and receiver will help set the course for how far the team can go, and Love’s work through any bumps at those spots will be key,” SI’s Albert Breer wrote.

The Packers open their preseason Saturday night against the Jets. Head coach Matt LaFleur plans to get all four quarterbacks on the roster meaningful reps.

One concern, however, is the weather forecast for Green Bay on game night.

“Looks like some possible risk of bad weather tonight in Green Bay. Hopefully can avoid any lightning, delays, suspensions, etc,” Packers reporter Andy Herman wrote.

For Sean Clifford, this preseason is crucial. Drafted to be Jordan Love’s backup, his spot on the roster is now in serious jeopardy.

“Clifford was drafted by Green Bay in the fifth round of the 2023 Draft, and the team was hoping he would establish himself as the primary backup to Jordan Love. However, that never happened. Instead, the team acquired Malik Willis, and Clifford was bumped down the depth chart,” Lombardi Ave’s Jaleel Grandberry wrote. “Clifford is fighting to be the team’s QB3. He’s currently in a battle with undrafted rookie quarterback Taylor Elgersma for the job. How both perform in the preseason will likely determine who the Packers keep. Whether it’s on the active roster or the practice squad, Green Bay is only likely to keep one.”

Clifford hasn’t met the expectations the Packers had when they drafted him. Now, he may be facing his final opportunity to stick in the NFL. A strong preseason showing is essential to keep his career alive—whether on the active roster or practice squad.
