The Minnesota Timberwolves have made it to the Western Conference Finals in the last two seasons. The franchise will be looking to take a step forward this season, led by 23-year-old All-Star Anthony Edwards.

The Timberwolves are heading into next season with high hopes after their strong form over the last few seasons and Edwards' ascension into NBA stardom.

With the 2025-26 season just two months away, the Timberwolves have announced how they'll spend their preseason in preparation for what is expected to be a big season.

Timberwolves Roster Changes After 2025 Free Agency

The Timberwolves will be excited to see their adjusted roster in action, although there aren't any incoming stars worth getting excited about.

The franchise lost a crucial 3-and-D asset, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, to the Atlanta Hawks while low-end rotation players Luka Garza and Josh Minott joined the Boston Celtics.

With Alexander-Walker being the only real rotational player to leave the franchise, the team hopes to replace him internally.

This likely means second-year swingman Terrance Shannon Jr. or third-year forward Jaylen Clark could get a lot of opportunity in preseason to groom them for a rotational role.

Similarly, the team will also hope second-year guard Rob Dillingham takes a leap forward and can reliably supplement 37-year-old Mike Conley with his production.

Backup rookie bigs Joan Beringer and Rocco Zikarsky (two-way) will also have eyes on them to see if they can wind up being useful for the win-now Timberwolves next season.

Additions

  •  Joan Beringer (17th pick in 2025 NBA Draft)

Departures

  • Nickeil Alexander-Walker (departs in free agency to Hawks)
  • Luka Garza (departs in free agency to Celtics)
  • Josh Minott (departs in free agency to Celtics)

Timberwolves Depth Chart Heading Into 2025-26 NBA Season

The Timberwolves will be hoping to show off the depth of their squad in preseason, although there will be major question marks around the competitiveness of the back-end players.

Edwards averaged 27.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists last season and is improving every season.

Julius Randle had a great year with averages of 18.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists, while Naz Reid averaged 14.2 points and 6.0 rebounds.

Jaden McDaniels might be among the best perimeter defenders in the NBA, and Rudy Gobert is proven on that front. Gobert is expected to miss EuroBasket 2025 and begin his basketball season in Minnesota.

Point Guards: Mike Conley, Rob Dillingham
Shooting Guards: Anthony Edwards, Donte DiVincenzo, Terrance Shannon Jr., Jaylen Clark
Small Forwards: Jaden McDaniels, Leonard Miller, Joe Ingles
Power Forwards: Julius Randle, Naz Reid, Enrique Freeman (Two-Way)
Centers: Rudy Gobert, Joan Beringer, Rocco Zikarsky (Two-Way), Jesse Edwards (Two-Way)

The depth beyond them is questionable. DiVincenzo had a streaky season, while Conley is another year older. Dillingham and Shannon Jr. are unproven, and so is rookie center Joan Beringer.

If these pieces don't fall into place, the Timberwolves could be in trouble next season.

Preseason will be the perfect time for them to figure out what their options are before a season where they look to secure the franchise's first-ever NBA Finals appearance.
