A fifth-round pic by Detroit in the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Wisconsin Badgers star last played in a game in 2022. Over three seasons (2020-'22), Cephus compiled 37 receptions for 568 yards and four touchdowns.
In April 2023, he was suspended for a season for violating the league's gambling policy by betting on games. Cephus was reinstated in 2024, and spent time with the Buffalo Bills, Texans, Los Angeles Rams, and most recently the San Francisco 49ers before landing back in Houston.
While with the Rams practice squad, he was coached by current Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley. Cephus will wear the No. 14 jersey, previously held by Jared Wayne who was waived on Tuesday.
In a corresponding move, the Texans waived wide receiver Johnny Johnson III, who was seen with his arm in a sling at practice Wednesday. Houston originally signed the former Oregon Ducks star as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He appeared in one game during his rookie season, but has primarily been with the team's practice squad.
The Texans will wrap up at The Greenbrier on Thursday before traveling to Minnesota for their first preseason contest on Saturday, August 9. Game time is set for 3 p.m. CT.
