Son Heung-min Sends Parting Message To Tottenham After $26.5 million Transfer originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Son Heung-min has officially left Tottenham Hotspur after his transfer to MLS club Los Angeles FC was confirmed on Wednesday.
Tottenham itself confirmed the development, announcing that Son has completed his permanent transfer to his new club. LAFC also shared a press release detailing the move and welcoming the South Korean star as he starts a new chapter in his career.
"LAFC announced today that the club has acquired Son Heung-Min from Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League," the team stated. "Son will occupy an international roster slot and will be eligible to play upon receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC)."
Son Heung-min Bids Farewell to Spurs
Right after his transfer was completed, Son posted a message on social media to reflect on his career and bid farewell to Tottenham fans.
The South Korean forward spent 10 years with the club, recording 173 goals and 101 assists across all competitions. He was also the first Asian player to win the Premier League Golden Boot award, which he did in the 2021–22 season after scoring 23 goals.
Naturally, Son couldn't help but get emotional over his exit.
"How to find the right words for this? I don’t know. I have been thinking for days. It’s impossible. But here I go," Son began his post.
"It’s time for me to say goodbye to Tottenham Hotspur. My home for the past decade. When I arrived in 2015, I didn’t speak English, I didn’t know London, but you welcomed me with open arms, believed in me, and stood by me through every high and low. I was just a boy from Korea with big dreams who was supposed to have no chance. And now, 10 years later, North London is in my heart forever."
The 33-year-old also admitted that it's the "hardest decision" he has ever made after pouring his "heart and soul into this club." He added, "I thought if I was ever going to leave, it would have to be on my terms, on the best terms, when our mission had been accomplished together."
Despite his departure, Son has nothing but appreciation for the club and its fans, adding that he hopes he made them all proud of what he has accomplished.
LAFC Paid Big to Get Son
Son's transfer to LAFC is certainly massive, not just because of his stature as a great of the game but also because of how much the MLS club paid to bring him to the United States.
According to CBS Sports, LAFC paid an MLS record transfer fee of $26.5 million for Son. It surpasses the $22 million that Atlanta United paid for former Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath.
Details about his salary with the club have not been disclosed. Regardless, LAFC gains one of the most proven players in English Premier League history in Son, who is also fresh from leading Tottenham to the 2025 UEFA Europa League title — the club's first trophy in 17 years.
