Watterson soccer voted central Ohio high school girls team of the year

Watterson girls soccer captured its first state championship.

Watterson soccer was selected by Dispatch.com readers as the central Ohio girls team of the year in the 2024-25 school year.

The Eagles (20-2) captured their first state title, defeating North Royalton 2-1 (3-0 on penalty kicks). Goalie Suzie Roginski made two diving saves during penalty kicks after stopping five shots between regulation and overtime. Sasha Smith, Emma Miller and Megan Goehring converted penalty kicks for Watterson. Sophie Scott scored the Eagles’ goal in regulation.

The Watterson girls soccer team captured its first state championship last November.

Fairfield Union basketball earned the girls team of the year honor during the Central Ohio High School Sports Awards on June 18, but Watterson was the choice of Dispatch.com readers in a poll conducted Aug. 4-8.

The Eagles edged Columbus Academy golf by 319 votes, 5,379-5,060. Watterson received 40.5% of the 13,281 total votes. Academy received 38.1% and Upper Arlington swimming and diving was third with 20.2% (2,680 votes).

Also nominated were Olentangy Liberty lacrosse, Hilliard Davidson track and field, DeSales lacrosse, Thomas Worthington field hockey, Pickerington Central basketball, Fairfield Union basketball and Lancaster cross-country.
