After spending the past two years at Montgomery Bell (Tenn.) Academy, 2026 Mississippi State commit Luke Hutchinson faces a new challenge this fall.
The Rivals three-star tight end will play this season at Avon Old (Conn.) Farms and is eager to face more competition. Hutchinson is rated as the nation’s No. 72 tight end and the state’s No. 32 prospect by Rivals composite rankings.
“August 20th is when school starts,” Hutchinson remarked. “The schedule we play is really, really good. Up there is new to me but we play a shorter season and start later than we did down south. We haven’t even done any team stuff yet. But it will be good competition. Every team I’ve looked into has at least 10 Division 1 commits whether it is SEC, ACC or Ivy League commits. It’s all good coaching and it is really good football.”
Hutchinson is also patiently awaiting to showcase his recent improvements on the field. He focused on one area of his game this offseason to expand his game at the tight end position.
“The biggest thing for me was speed,” added the 6-foot-3.5 and 235-pound Hutchinson. “Now that I am confident in my abilities, I can shake defenders on my routes and get to the second level. The biggest thing for me, though, was speed. I want that breakaway speed and getting away from tacklers or getting to the second level for blocking. That was the biggest thing for me.”
Hutchinson committed to Mississippi State in June and was one of three tight end prospects to commit to the Bulldogs that month, joining Adam Land and Zayion Cotton. What his role will be at tight end will be determined later and Hutchinson is open to being an attached or unattached tight end.
“I think it depends on what the season looks like,” Hutchinson explained. “I know there are two other tight ends in the class and it will be a diverse room, which I am looking forward to competing in. But I don’t think it has been fully discussed. But any way I can get on the field is my goal.”
Hutchinson is working to set his schedule to see Mississippi State in person this fall. But that may be a task since his new team also plays a lot of games on Saturdays.
“We only play one Friday game and the rest are on Saturdays,” noted Hutchinson. “So hopefully I can time it up to go see Mississippi State play on that weekend we don’t have a Saturday game.”
And regarding Jeff Lebby’s second season at Mississippi state, Hutchinson expects the Bulldogs to fare better than last season.
“I expect a lot of good things from Coach Lebby this season,” Hutchinson mentioned. “Coming in the first year is always tough. Now he has dudes and I know they have been working. I am eager to see them take off this season.”
