The former middleweight champion hints at two familiar foes as he eyes an Octagon return

After three straight losses inside the UFC Octagon, the future of Israel Adesanya has been one of the most talked-about storylines in MMA. The last time fans saw the former middleweight champion compete was earlier this year—where he suffered a stunning Round 2 knockout at the hands of Nassourdine Imavov. That loss marked a third consecutive defeat and further blurred the trajectory of a fighter who, not long ago, had reclaimed his title in emphatic fashion against Alex Pereira.

The fall from that triumphant moment was steep. Following the Pereira rematch win, Adesanya entered a highly anticipated title defense against Dricus du Plessis—a bout that ended in disappointment.

Since then, speculation has surrounded his next move. But in a recent exclusive interview with The Sun, Adesanya opened up about his mindset and hinted at two possible opponents for his return.

Speaking on Paulo Costa and Sean Strickland, Adesanya said, 'I think Paulo was going to fight this weekend. If he had won, I bet you he would've said something stupid... And give him a chance at redemption like people have done for me as well.' As for Strickland, Adesanya shrugged, 'If he wants to fight, sure. If not... it's alright.'

Both matchups would be rematches. Adesanya defeated Costa by TKO at UFC 253, while Strickland handed him a shocking loss at UFC 293. The idea of facing either has triggered mixed reactions online. One fan wrote, 'Fight Strickland. Avenge your loss. Why fight someone you soundly beat before?' Another responded bluntly, 'Cause he's probably tired of losing lol.'

Regardless of who he chooses, one thing is clear: Adesanya’s next step won’t just be about legacy—it will be about redemption. Whether it’s Costa, Strickland, or someone else entirely, the return of ‘The Last Stylebender’ promises to be a major event—less explosive, perhaps, but undeniably massive.
