The Phoenix Suns were given an average offseason grade by an ESPN analyst despite making major changes.
Suns Receive Average Offseason Grade From ESPN Analyst Despite Busy Summer originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
It has been a busy offseason thus far for the Phoenix Suns as they have completely revamped their roster around star guard Devin Booker.
After struggling once again last season, the Suns entered the offseason looking to make some big changes and that is exactly what they have done as they officially ended the big three era in Phoenix.
This came after they traded Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets for a package headlined by Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks and they then bought out Bradley Beal’s contract which allowed him to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Phoenix then signed Booker to a massive two-year extension, making him the focal point of their roster retool.
Of course, the Suns also added Khaman Maluach, Koby Brea and Rasheer Fleming in the 2025 draft and they also acquired Mark Williams in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets.
Despite their busy offseason, ESPN’s Kevin Pelton gave the Suns a C+ offseason grade.
“Like Milwaukee, Phoenix put a massive amount of dead salary on its books with a buyout for the final two years of Bradley Beal's contract. After dealing Kevin Durant, the Suns can't realistically contend. Even making the playoffs will be a stretch in the West. But they have flipped their roster in a younger direction with three 2025 draft picks -- having started the summer with none -- and 23-year-old center Mark Williams, acquired via trade,” Pelton wrote.
Pelton does make a great point about the Suns flipping their roster and making it much younger, though he, like many around the league, believes that they will not be contenders next season.
Despite this, the Suns have added a ton of talent to their roster around Booker and they may be able to surprise some people next season as a potential Play-In team, though it may take a while to get things started next season with the amount of changes they made to their roster.
