As first reported by Transfermarkt and later The Athletic, RB Leipzig are interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott.
Leipzig sees the England under-21 midfielder as the perfect replacement for Xavi Simons, who is edging closer to a move to Chelsea. Elliott is said to have already held talks with both Leipzig head coach Ole Werner and sporting director Marcel Schäfer.
Liverpool’s asking price for Elliott is said to be £40m, with a buy-back option included, or £50m without one.
The main question over the transfer is, could Leipzig afford this? Considering they are looking to sell Simons for €70m and are also close to offloading Benjamin Seško for a fee of €85m if he chooses to move to Manchester United, which is looking likely.
Leipzig will have significant funds to finance a move for Elliott, and Liverpool will know this. This would then make the 22-year-old their joint second most expensive signing ever behind Simons, who joined permanently earlier this year.
