Evan Ferguson (20) has confirmed the reports that, before joining West Ham United on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion during the winter window, Olympique de Marseille wanted to sign him, in a recent interview with Italian outlet La Gazzetta Dello Sport

Marseille had been looking to add a number nine to their ranks during January, following a disappointing six-month spell from Elye Wahi (22), who had struggled to live up to the pressures of a big-money move from RC Lens and was swiftly moved on to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Les Phocéens eventually turned to Amine Gouiri (25), who scored 10 and assisted three following his midseason move from Stade Rennais. However, before that, Marseille had been interested in bringing Ferguson to the Stade Vélodrome, where the Irish international would have reunited with his former head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

De Zerbi had previously told the press during his time coaching Brighton that Ferguson had the potential to become one of the best strikers in Europe. Something Ferguson reflected on in his interview with the Italian outlet, “It was really nice, but in football, things change quickly. I want to be one of the best, play well, and score goals, helping the team. [De Zerbi] sent me a message in January, wanting to bring me to Marseille. Now, I’m happy to be here [on loan at AS Roma].

This summer, Ferguson joined Roma on loan as he attempts to kickstart his career following a difficult few seasons.
