Last month, it was revealed that Deion Sanders was cured of his bladder cancer following a successful surgery. He ultimately underwent 14 total procedures, including a bladder removal to remove the cancer.

His son, Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders spoke to media on Monday about being away from his father during his treatment during his first NFL offseason. In true Coach Prime fashion, he wants his son’s focus on football while he takes care of himself.

“I need to stay focused mentally. Dad, he’s one person that he’ll handle what we’ve got to do,” Sanders said. “So it was something that, you know, we really ain’t need to have no formal conversation about because he’s like, ‘Y’all need to focus on what y’all can focus on you. You can’t sit here and feel sorry for me, and then that’s affecting y’all doing that.’

“So, we all knew, because our family be talking in group chats and everything. But at the end of the day, y’all able to see, able to understand everything on the field, off the field with what I go through. You’ve got to be some type of human at some point.”

Coach Prime is gearing up for his third season at Colorado after leading the Buffs’ impressive turnaround in 2024. The program went 8-5 one year after a 4-8 record, making it to the Alamo Bowl. However, Shedeur Sanders, as well as Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter are off to the NFL, meaning CU will have a new-look roster in 2025.

He’ll be able to do so cancer free after a long journey and over a dozen procedures. Deion Sanders, a noted religious man, acknowledged that “God is good” over and over and was truly thankful for all those around him.

“The process wasn’t easy … you saw all the bull junk that transpired on draft day, it wasn’t just that,” Sanders said after being cured of his cancer diagnosis. “I had a surgery coming up. My sons to this day don’t know what transpired. I just told them something with my foot again, because I wanted them to focus on making the team and not focused on Dad. So they really don’t know.

After such a harrowing ordeal, the Sanders family as a whole can turn their focus back on football. Shedeur with the Browns, Shilo Sanders with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Coach Prime with the Buffs.
