Which Giants will make the cut? Our 53-man roster projection heading into Preseason Week 1

Here's our roster projection and depth chart prediction for the New York Giants in advance of their preseason opener against the Bills in Buffalo.

EAST RUTHERFORD - The New York Giants open their preseason this Saturday in Buffalo, and all eyes will be on the rookie classes from each of the past two NFL Drafts. The trip for the game against the Bills should represent the professional debut of quarterback Jaxson Dart, and we may get most if not all of their rookies in their first games.

So where does the roster stand two weeks into training camp? Here is our weekly 53-man projection and notes on the depth chart:

OFFENSE (25)

Quarterback (3)

  • Russell Wilson
  • Jameis Winston
  • Jaxson Dart

Breakdown: Russell Wilson remains in command of the offense, and he's continued to have a solid camp. He has thrown just four interceptions in team drills, two of which came in Friday's session when safeties Dane Belton and Tyler Nubin got him. There has been legitimate competition between Dart and Winston for the QB2 spot, and Dart is for the most part running the second team offense. Saturday's preseason opener in Buffalo should be enlightening. Winston has had a good summer and he might be the most physically-gifted passer here. Tommy DeVito clearly knows the offense well, and he has had a couple really nice timing throws as the result. The reps are just not there for QB4, so unfortunately for DeVito, he's as much a coach in being a presence in the QB room than truly competing for a roster spot. He should get time against the Bills as well.

Giants teammates Russell Wilson, left, and Malik Nabers chat on the sidelines of Saturday's practice in training camp.

Running back (3)

  • Tyrone Tracy
  • Devin Singletary
  • Cam Skattebo

Breakdown: Tracy is the lead back and he appears more decisive in his running style so far this camp. Singletary had a big week getting more of a workload with Skattebo in and out of the lineup dealing with unspecified soft tissue wear and tear. That's a convoluted way of saying the Giants are pulling the reins back on the rookie fourth-round pick a bit to calm down whatever he has going on and avoid a longer term issue. Miller could open some eyes in the preseason, while Eric Gray remains on the PUP list. If Skattebo is going to be managed by the training staff and miss , the Giants could look elsewhere to add another RB.

Wide receiver (6)

  • Malik Nabers
  • Darius Slayton
  • Wan'Dale Robinson
  • Jalin Hyatt
  • Ihmir Smith-Marsette
  • Beaux Collins

Breakdown: Undrafted rookie Beaux Collins has stood out with chances on the first and second teams with Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston, so he gets the early nod. Dalen Cambre is another UDFA rookie who could have a path to replace Bryce Ford-Wheaton [torn Achilles] because of his special teams prowess in college at Louisiana. Smith-Marsette is the kick returner. Montrell Washington has been coming on as of late and he has good rapport with Jaxson Dart out of the slot.

Tight end (4)

  • Theo Johnson
  • Chris Manhertz
  • Daniel Bellinger
  • Thomas Fidone

Breakdown: Fidone left practice Saturday with an undisclosed injury/, but his spot is an important domino in the chase for the 53.

Offensive line (9)

  • LT Andrew Thomas
  • LG Jon Runyan Jr.
  • C John Michael Schmitz
  • RG Greg Van Roten
  • RT Jermaine Eluemunor
  • T James Hudson
  • T/G Marcus Mbow
  • G Evan Neal
  • G Jake Kubas

Breakdown: James Hudson has been at left tackle with the 1s with Andrew Thomas starting camp on the PUP list. His play has been inconsistent, but there's no question Hudson has gotten under the skin of his defensive line teammates. His second week was better than the first. Thomas continues to ramp up and can be activated at any time. It's possible Mbow gets even more of a look. He has been with the second team playing both left and right tackle, and his footwork has been impressive. John Michael Schmitz bounced back with a solid week, especially when he was asked to get out and block in space. It's going to be interesting to watch Evan Neal in Saturday's preseason game against the Bills in Buffalo. Former third-round pick Joshua Ezeudu has some work to do in fighting to force the Giants to keep 10.

DEFENSE (25)

Defensive line (5)

  • Dexter Lawrence
  • Rakeem Nunez-Roches
  • Roy Robertson-Harris
  • Darius Alexander
  • Elijah Chatman

Breakdown: This position still needs to evolve. Nunez-Roches is the returning starter. Alexander has the best chance to push into the starting lineup. Robertson-Harris is getting a lot of reps with the Giants wisely not wanting to overuse Dexter Lawrence. Chatman gets the fifth spot for the second straight week, and he's also showing his versatility with a handful of snaps at fullback, too, The Giants have depth here and it'll be a roller coaster for all those competing for a spot here. The question is about the quality of depth, especially with Alexander being a rookie. The Giants may also explore the market between now and Week 1.

Edge (4)

  • Brian Burns
  • Kayvon Thibodeaux
  • Abdul Carter
  • Chauncey Golston

Breakdown: I feel like this group is set and everyone knows it. When Burns, Thibodeaux and Carter are on the field together, they're going to be hard to stop. Carter has been everything the Giants could have hoped for and more. Free agent signee Victor Dimukeje was injured while training away from the team, tearing his pectoral and landing on the NFI list to start camp.

Inside linebacker (5)

  • Bobby Okereke
  • Micah McFadden
  • Chris Board
  • Darius Muasau
  • Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles

Breakdown: Okereke and McFadden are mainstays in the middle. Board and Muasau are core special teams players. Flanningan-Fowles is also a contributor on special teams.

Cornerback (8)

  • Paulson Adebo
  • Tae Banks
  • Dru Phillips
  • Cor'Dale Flott
  • Tre Hawkins III
  • Korie Black
  • Nic Jones
  • Art Green

Breakdown: Banks and Flott were neck-and-neck in Week 1, but Banks has moved ahead with Flott dealing with an unspecified injury. Flott missed Saturday's practice. Phillips is a potential game-changer at nickel. Nic Jones had a Pick 6 of Jaxson Dart on Day 1 and he's been pushing for bigger chances as Phillips' backup. He deserves a role, which could put Hawkins or Black in jeopardy if that continues. The Giants liked what they got from Art Green late last season as a gunner, so we'll see if he can have value there and add an eighth corner.

Safety (3)

  • Jevon Holland
  • Tyler Nubin
  • Dane Belton

Breakdown: The top of this position is set with Holland and Nubin. Both have made plays and gives the Giants their best safety tandem since Super Bowl XLVI with Antrel Rolle and Kenny Phillips. Belton has had a quiet start to camp after such a loud spring as a takeaway machine. He did pick off Russell Wilson on Friday, so maybe he's about to heat up again. K'Von Wallace was signed on the eve of camp, so he's working his way up the depth chart. I had him on my last projection, but went with an extra corner on this one. Rookie Makari Paige got some snaps with the first team with the Giants backing off Holland some on Saturday since he's been grinding from the start of camp. It'll be interesting to see if the former Michigan star can impress in the preseason games and earn more of a look.

Specialists (3)

  • K Graham Gano
  • P Jamie Gillan
  • LS Casey Kreiter

Breakdown: No reason to think anything has changed here. Jude McAtamney is still on track to be a second kicker on the practice squad as part of the International Pathway Program.
