After Micah Parsons' trade request, Jerry Jones can ask for a lot in return from NFL teams calling about the pass rusher.
“Massive Trade Haul”: What Cowboys Could Expect in Return for Micah Parsons originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons shook up the NFL market on Friday by announcing that he has requested a trade ahead of the 2025 season.
There will be plenty of time for the Cowboys to look back on how negotiations for a long-term contract extension for Parsons could have been handled differently.
For now, they must consider what to ask for when the phone starts ringing from NFL rivals wishing to strike a deal for the two-time first-team All-Pro pass rusher, who has been with Dallas since entering the league in 2021.
The good news for Jerry Jones and the Cowboys front office is that if they wish to move forward and grant Parsons' trade request, they could expect a "massive" return, according to ESPN's Bill Barnwell — and plenty of teams should be interested.
Micah Parsons Announces Cowboys Trade Request
"I did everything I could to show that I wanted to be a Cowboy and wear the star on my helmet," said Parsons, 26, in a lengthy statement on social media. "I wanted to play in front of the best fans in sports and make this Americas team once again."

However, things soured for Parsons as contract negotiations dragged on. Here are a few of the tension points he mentioned in his post:
- Parsons tried to get a deal done early. His agent, David Mulugheta, reached out to the Cowboys after the 2023 season, but they were not interested in negotiating.
- Parsons was willing to take less money. He wanted to start negotiating again in 2024, before Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns and T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers had elevated the market by signing big-money contracts.
- Negotiations held without Parsons' agent. Parsons says he had an informal conversation with Jerry Jones that became about his contract even though his agent was not present.
"Unfortunately I no longer want to be here," Parsons typed, before confirming that he personally submitted a trade request to Cowboys CEO and director of player personnel Stephen Jones.
What is Micah Parsons' Trade Value?
On Wednesday, Barnwell created a comprehensive guide to all the NFL players who could fetch at least one first-round draft pick in a trade. Parsons made the cut easily, coming in as the most valuable player on Dallas' roster before it was known that he had requested the trade.
Barnwell estimates that, at a minimum, Parsons would be worth two first-round picks in a trade, but likely more.
The list was based on historical trends and positional value in addition to career performance on the field. Parsons earns high marks in every consideration, making him an extremely valuable chip for the Cowboys.
What Micah Parsons has done in four years with Dallas:

🏈4 Pro Bowls
🏈3x All-Pro
🏈Defensive Rookie of the Year
🏈52.5 sacks
🏈9 forced fumbles
🏈4 fumble recoveries
At age 26, he is now asking the team to trade him. https://t.co/nCe0gbPq2U
The closest comparison is Khalil Mack, who was traded from the Oakland Raiders to the Chicago Bears in 2018 for two first-round picks, a third-rounder and a sixth-rounder. The Bears also received a second-round pick in the deal, making the net value just short of two first-rounders, per Barnwell.
However, he asserts that the Cowboys could ask for more than that. Parsons is a year younger than Mack was when he was traded. He also put up superior pass rushing numbers in terms of sacks (52.5 to Mack's 40.5) and quarterback knockdowns (112 to Mack's 84) over their first four seasons.
Which Teams Could Trade for Micah Parsons?
We've established that Parsons would command a lot of draft capital in return. On top of that, a trade partner would have to have enough cap space to sign Parsons to an extension in the $40 million per year range, given Watt's new record-setting three-year, $123 million deal.
Besides the Cowboys, here are the teams with the best odds to have Parsons, a Pennsylvania native, on their roster for the first snap of the NFL season, per DraftKings.
- Philadelphia Eagles +1000
- New England Patriots +1000
- Los Angeles Chargers +1500
- Arizona Cardinals +1600
- San Francisco 49ers +1600
- Los Angeles Rams +1800
- Carolina Panthers +2200
Dallas may have lost a generational star, but no matter which team comes calling, they would be in for a huge return for Parsons.
