The Toronto Blue Jays enter their weekend series against the Kansas City Royals with a 3.5-game lead in the American League East over the second-place New York Yankees.

Toronto made a handful of trades before Thursday’s deadline, headlined by the acquisition of two-time All-Star Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for prospect Khal Stephen.

Bieber’s last major-league start came on April 2, 2024, before he underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and began a lengthy recovery process.

The 30-year-old right-hander had served as Cleveland’s ace since debuting in 2018. His best season came in 2020 when he won the AL Cy Young Award, posting a 1.63 ERA and striking out 122 batters—both led all of MLB.

Before Friday’s matchup with Kansas City, Blue Jays manager John Schneider provided an update on Bieber’s status and his timeline to make his 2025 debut.

Schneider announced that Bieber would throw a bullpen session in Toronto today and is expected to make his next rehab start Sunday with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

Barring any setbacks, Bieber is on track to make his Blue Jays debut sometime in August and will join a rotation that already features former All-Stars Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt and Jose Berrios.

Toronto hopes Bieber can return to his Cy Young form and provide a major boost down the stretch as the team pushes for a postseason berth.

Over 134 career starts, Bieber owns a 62–32 record, 958 strikeouts and a 3.22 ERA, bringing both experience and upside to a contending Blue Jays roster.
