Yankees’ Trent Grisham joins Mantle-Maris-Berra in New York trifecta history

This is a fun list.

Trent Grisham led off Sunday's afternoon game in Miami with a home run.

It was the 20th of the season for the New York Yankees' centerfielder, and that's a notable number for historic reasons.

There have now been four seasons in Yanks history in which three outfielders in the pinstripes have hit at least 20 home runs, according to NY Yankees Stats on X.

These are quite the trios:

  • 1941: Joe DiMaggio, Tommy Henrich, Charlie Keller
  • 1961: Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris
  • 2004: Hideki Matsui, Gary Sheffield, Bernie Williams
  • 2025: Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham

Being a part of a list that includes DiMaggio, Berra, Mantle, Maris and the rest is a great place to be.

And an aside: Yes, Berra played outfield later in his career. He was actually the left fielder who watched Bill Mazeroski's walk-off homer fly over his head in Game 7 of the World Series.

Grisham was certainly the most unlikely part of the Judge and Bellinger grouping to hit 20 homers.

The former Padres rising star entered the season with a career-high of 17 homers, which he hit in 2022.

Last year in 76 games with the Yankees, Grisham hit nine. That's a 20-homer pace, but it wasn't a given that he'd see this much playing time.

Grisham has hit well since the start of the year, though, and so he has stayed in the lineup.

He has a chance to beat his career-high .251 average, which he did way back in 2020 in the shortened season. That was also the only season he had an OPS over .800 (.808), and he's tracking above .820 so far this season in that stat.

Grisham, with a Reggie Jackson-esque mustache and a powerful lefty swing, has been one of the keys to the Yankees' season. It's been really fun to watch, and now he's put himself into a historic spot in franchise history.
