Ruben Amorim went into depth about his first months at Manchester United during the club's pre-season tour of the United States.
"All the struggles we had in games, I felt it before. That was the hardest part," Amorim said about his team's poor results for much of the season that saw United finish 15th in the Premier League.
"To go to the games and know that we are not going to be competitive – I was really frustrated."
Despite poor results, Amorim stuck with his method although it's hard to read too much into pre-season, so far the team look much improved as the players continue to adapt.
"Sometimes, when you are losing, you might think let's change the standards a little bit for them to be with me,' Amorim continued.
"I didn't – and they saw it. Now they understand when I say something, I will do it.
"I don't treat the players as babies. But they have rules now and that can change the way you train.
"I'm always on top. If you don't train in the right way, I have footage to show you. And I show you in front of everybody."
The Portuguese manager also talked about the so-called 'bomb squad' of Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia who are not a part of the first team squad.
Amorim had praise for Garnacho in particular: "Garnacho is a really talented boy. But sometimes things don't work out.
"You cannot explain specifically what it is. It's clear he wants a different thing with a different leadership.
"They want new challenges. The market is open. I'm just working with the players that I think are going to stay."
United continue their pre-season tour against Everton before returning to England for a friendly with Fiorentina at Old Trafford.
