The 22-year-old had a bounce-back week.
The first and second weeks of training camp could not have gone any differently from each other for Colts wide receiver AD Mitchell.
In the opening week of practice, the second-year wide receiver struggled with consistency. He had drop, after drop, after drop. He wasn’t on the same page as either quarterback. Frustration was building, and questions were being asked. Not the performance Mitchell was looking for after a disappointing rookie year.
He was standing out. For all the wrong reasons.
"It felt like something was in the air or something," Mitchell said after practice on Saturday. "I knew it would eventually come together. I knew my hands worked. I knew my routes worked. It was all just a matter of time."
It did, in fact, all come together in the second week. Mitchell looks like a completely different player. The 22-year-old has gone from struggling to standing out.
A stand-out week is exactly what Mitchell needed as he looks to create a role for himself in the Colts offense. Going into his second season, he feels more prepared to make an impact after spending his rookie year in Alec Pierce’s shadow.
"I feel more poised," Mitchell admitted. "I just feel more comfortable, whether it's in the meeting rooms, walkthrough. I'm not focused on what the play is, what do I have to do. I'm focused on how I'm doing it and why I'm doing what I'm doing."
Transitioning from the “what” to the “why” is a positive move in the right direction. Now all that’s left for Mitchell is to prove himself on the field and live up to the expectations for him in Indy.
