Matthew Stafford Injury Sparks Debate!
Former NFL QB Shuts Down Matthew Stafford Injury Concerns originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Matthew Stafford is entering his 17th NFL season at age 37, and some injury concerns are warranted due to his stature. However, that did not stop the Los Angeles Rams media and parts of the fanbase from being worried over his lower back issues.
According to head coach Sean McVay, Stafford has been going through his own recovery regimen and not training with the team currently. At the same time, McVay also said that they can't be "smart enough" with handling his return, so they are taking it week by week.
Chris Simms, former NFL quarterback turned analyst, clarifies that the injury is not that concerning, and if Stafford were fully healthy, even then, he shouldn't have been training at this point in the offseason.
Talking about the 37-year-old quarterback on NFL on NBC, Simms said, "It's funny. I'm actually at no concern at all, or little concern. Just a little bit…First off, you have to take the player into account, and this is the ultimate soldier, and he is at an age where they're gonna be more safe than aggressive."
However, Simms also pointed out that in the case of the lower back or the back in general, it is a difficult predicament for the quarterbacks because they use their upper body to produce the required torque.
If Stafford were put into a position where he had to throw bombs all day to receivers like Davante Adams and Puka Nacua during training camp, it could potentially worsen his situation.
Currently, there isn't much reason to be concerned, but there's reason to caution, which the Rams are adhering to as the focus remains to get him ready for the first game of the season.
The Los Angeles Rams have been a solid contender for the last few years. Stafford has been a huge reason for that success. The team will be looking forward to him kicking off the season on September 7, against the Houston Texans.
