Could the Knicks be nearing the end of the Mitchell Robinson era?

What can be expected from Mitchell Robinson as he enters his contract year with the New York Knicks?

With the NBA offseason's free agency period starting to calm down, there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered for new head coach Mike Brown and the New York Knicks.

Heading into August, the Knicks still have multiple roster spots that need to be filled. After adding Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele last month, New York still has two roster spots to fill before the start of training camp on Oct. 1.

Of course, the Knicks' salary cap is a big question. Mikal Bridges signed a four-year, $150 million deal that was slightly less than the maximum amount he could have gotten, which helps. But New York still has some lingering contract situations that will need to be settled shortly.

The Knicks' longest-tenured player, center Mitchell Robinson, is heading into his contract year, and there's uncertainty behind what his future may lead to.

Robinson, 27, is heading into year eight in the league. After signing a four-year, $60 million deal in 2022, next season will be his last in New York if a deal doesn't get done. With injuries being a consistent pattern for the big man out of Western Kentucky, will the Knicks offer him an extension?

"The elephant in the room is that the Louisiana native just cannot stay healthy for a myriad of reasons. Lower-body injuries have derailed multiple seasons of his career, and despite how important he is every postseason, he’s barely contributing in the regular season," SB Nation's Michael Zeno wrote.

Robinson's regular-season numbers have started to deplete since playing under his new deal, going from 26.9 minutes per game in 58 starts in 2022-23 to 17.1 minutes per game in just 17 games, starting in three, last year.

With the beginning of Karl-Anthony Towns' tenure in New York last season and a new head coach in Mike Brown making the game plans, Mitchell Robinson's time in New York could be drawing to a close soon.
