Colts make like-for-like change in secondary

A familiar face returns to Indianapolis.

Amid the mini injury crisis in the Colts secondary, the team has made a like-for-like roster change.

The Colts signed cornerback Chris Lammons and released cornerback Corey Ballentine, exchanging one corner for another.

Ballentine, 29, was signed March 14 by Indianapolis. He was brought in as an initial role player to contribute on special teams. In his three seasons with the Packers, he recorded 12 special teams tackles and two forced fumbles.

Less than five months since joining the Colts, Ballentine is out in favor of a player the Colts are already familiar with in Lammons.

Lammons was with the Colts in each of the last two seasons, and now returns for a third. Like Ballentine, he’s a special teams role player. He also appeared in five games as a nickel cornerback.

If the transaction is any indication, the Colts expect Lammons to play significant time on special teams and elect to go with a player they already know well instead of a less familiar player like Ballentine.

Special teams coordinator Brian Mason has a type of player he likes on his unit, and it appears Lammons is a better fit.

“Who can do their job, who can play fundamentally sound, and who can be physical that we can then count on to make plays?” Mason said following practice July 25
