The NFL season unofficially kicked off Thursday with the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. NBC's Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth were in the booth to call this exhibition between the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers.
Collinsworth has been in the "Sunday Night Football" booth for the past 15 seasons, providing sharp commentary and a few playful jabs. In 2023, he was officially named a member of the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame. It was long overdue for the 17-time Sports Emmy Award winner.
"Never shy to offer strong opinions, always well-prepared and adept at quickly analyzing plays, Collinsworth has been a perfect replacement for [John] Madden at NBC," the Associated Press wrote.
Despite having decades worth of experience, Collinsworth isn't universally loved. In fact, some fans are always complaining about his commentary.
With that said, it only took one quarter of football for social media users to criticize Collinsworth's performance during the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game.
"In my entire life, I've listened to A LOT of commentators. Cris Collinsworth's skills as a commentator are the worst I've seen from someone who gets primetime games (in any sport) consistently," one fan declared. "It's legit bad."
"Preseason games typically aren’t bad unless you are listening to Cris Collinsworth," a second fan
"Excited to be watching football again… not excited to realize Cris Collinsworth hasn’t retired yet," another fan said.
"Didn’t think it was even possible but I think Cris Collinsworth is already on track to have the worst year yet," a social media user wrote.
"Nothing says football is back like seeing 8 tweets in a row bashing Cris Collinsworth.
Whether fans like it or not, Collinsworth will remain NBC's color analyst for "Sunday Night Football."
The 2025 NFL regular season will begin on Sept. 4 with the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles.
