Chargers chosen as top spot for trade that would rock the NFL

The Los Angeles Chargers could be in on the Micah Parsons sweepstakes, if that becomes a thing.

The Los Angeles Chargers, fresh off an impressive performance in the preseason Hall of Fame Game, could be in the mood to make a big deal.

Dallas Cowboys star linebacker Micah Parsons has requested a trade out of Dallas and while many may see that and think it has no chance to happen, Parsons seems more than ready to leave. "I stayed quiet but again after repeated shots at myself and all the narratives I have made a tough decision I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys", wrote Parsons.

While the contract extension he is looking for would certainly mend those fences, the Cowboys may opt instead to trade their star player. Should that happen, Garrett Podell of CBS Sports sees the Chargers as one of the top teams to make the deal.

"The Los Angeles Chargers made a massive leap in Year 1 of the Jim Harbaugh era in 2024, going from a 5-12 team in 2023 to 11-6 this past season and earning a playoff berth. However, they were unable to bother Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud enough in a 32-12 wild card round defeat, despite the Texans' struggles to keep Stroud upright all year long. In a division with Kansas City Chiefs three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, the Chargers could use as much pass rush help as they can get", wrote Podell.

The Chargers have the cap space to trade for Parsons and then sign him to the deal he has been asking the Cowboys for. Acquiring Parsons would give the Chargers one of the most ferocious defenses in the NFL.

What would such a deal cost? Well, it wouldn't come cheap. The Chargers would likely have to give up multiple premium picks for one of the best defensive players in the league who is still only 26  years old. ESPN's Adam Schefter reminded fans of the last time one of the league's best pass-rushers was traded. Here was what the Oakland Raiders got in the deal for Khalil Mack (who coincidentally plays for the Chargers now) from the Chicago Bears.

Parsons has 52.5 sacks in his first four seasons and it goes without saying that he would be a massive addition to the defense in Los Angeles. Parsons would join Mack and Tuli Tuipolotu to form a pass-rushing group that no one would want to deal with. It still seems difficult to imagine Parsons getting moved, and if he does, the Chargers paying up for him would also go against their conventional plans, but Jim Harbaugh is a competitor and he knows this team isn't too far off. Perhaps he pushes the front office to make the deal?
