Did the Sky make a mistake?
Chicago Sky Hit With Harsh Reminder as Sonia Citron Shows What They Missed Out On originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Chicago Sky lost their sixth straight game and 19th of the season, falling to the Washington Mystics, 103-86, on Tuesday.
Rookie Sonia Citron led the way for the Mystics, scoring 19 points in the first half en route to a career-high 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Another rookie, Kiki Iriafen, also stepped up and tallied 22 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Angel Reese, who recently suffered from a back injury, returned from a two-game absence and recorded a 22-point, 13-rebound double-double for the Sky. However, her efforts weren't enough to keep the team competitive, with Chicago trailing by as many as 19 points in the contest.
Sonia Citron Shows Chicago Sky What They Let Slip Away
One of the biggest stories of the game, however, was Citron and her connection with the Sky.
It's worth noting that the Mystics took Citron with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. That pick, nonetheless, was previously owned by the Sky. Chicago traded it to the Mystics prior to the draft for All-Star guard Ariel Atkins.
The Mystics also received the Sky's 2027 second-round pick, as well as the rights to swap first-round picks in 2027 as part of the deal.
Following Citron's sensational performance against the Sky, fans took to social media to remind the Sky of what they just missed out on.

"For those who don't know, Chicago Sky traded the 3rd overall pick (Sonia Citron) to Washington. Look what she did to them," a commenter wrote while posting Citron's stats from the game.
"Sky really should’ve drafted Sonia Citron, huh?" a viewer added.
A poster remarked, "The Sky didn’t think Sonia Citron was worthy of the #3 overall pick. Basketball karma."
"Sky fans gotta be SICK that they missed out Sonia Citron. Oof!" a social media user shared.
"The Chicago Sky chose not draft Sonia Citron. Someone should be fired," a poster exclaimed.
"Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen have 22 points each. I know the Sky are kicking themselves every time they see Sonia hooping after trading that pick that turned into her," a WNBA supporter stated.
Did the Chicago Sky Make a Mistake?
For what it's worth, it's understandable why the Sky made the move for Atkins and parted ways with the No. 3 pick. They already had Courtney Vandersloot at point guard, and Atkins was largely expected to help them improve their defense in order to contend for the title.
The Sky also selected Hailey Van Lith with the 11th pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, so their guard depth looked good despite missing out on Citron.
With Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso at their core, they certainly built a team that has the talent to compete at a high level.
Unfortunately, the Sky have struggled defensively all season long. It didn't help that Vandersloot suffered a season-ending torn ACL after just seven games.
The Sky dropped to 7-19 on the season with their latest loss to the Mystics, with their playoff hopes slipping away. With that being said, the team certainly can't focus too much on what could have been, especially as they try to figure out how to turn things around.
