Chargers' Trey Lance makes QB case after bust stints with 49ers, Cowboys

Could this be something?

Take all of this with the biggest grain of salt you can find.

But the Trey Lance hype train has just slightly appeared around the mountain heading back toward the station.

Yes, it was the Hall of Fame Game, the opening preseason game that isn't indicative of anything.

Yes, Lance is firmly planted as the Chargers' QB3. That's why he got three quarters worth of run to begin with. Los Angeles wasn't playing Justin Herbert or Taylor Heinicke at all.

And yeah, the Lions had a shell of their usual defense out there opposing Lance.

But man, the dude looked good.

Lance went 13-for-20 for 120 yards. He threw a pair of touchdowns.

The first was a 5-yard TD to tight end Will Dissly. The second was a 15-yarder to rookie wideout KeAndre Lambert-Smith.

Lance has never come close to the hype.

The 49ers moved mountains to get up to No. 2 and take him in 2021 out of North Dakota State. He was the toolsy quarterback from the small school who may have been raw but was meant to have massive upside.

He never came close to shining as bright as expected in San Francisco, though. He didn't even make it through his rookie deal before being shipped to the Cowboys.

With Dallas, Lance saw the field a bit but was never in a critical part of the depth chart.

This offseason, he wound up with the Chargers, a total reclamation project at this point.

But every project needs to start somewhere. And on Thursday night in Canton, Ohio, Lance looked like a legitimate NFL quarterback. That's something.
