Alabama OC Ryan Grubb gave an interesting evaluation of all three of his quarterbacks, but one in particular stood out to him.
Day 2 of Alabama’s fall practice finds offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb under the spotlight, giving his thoughts about the quarterback race.
Grubb made it clear he wants one quarterback to separate himself soon; in fact, when he’d like the decision to be made, he joked, “Yesterday.”
Grubb gave his evaluation of Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell, with one quarterback starting to separate himself from the rest.
“All these guys, they are in different levels of their progressions as quarterbacks in college,” Grubb said to the media Thursday. “I think that all of them, just like any position, have a lot of different strengths. I think right now, Ty is continuing to show a ton of command. I thought he did a better job today than the other two guys at that. He continues to progress as a leader.”
But the QB who seems to be putting pressure on Simpson for the starting role is Keelon Russell.
His development at the position continues to impress the coaches.
“Keelon’s ability to see the field and his vision and his innate ability to make a play, even potentially when there’s not one there, is a really, really high level,” Grubb said. “Austin just has elite arm talent. A big guy that’s strong and can power through things.”
While Grubb wants to name a starter soon, he cautions that it is still an ongoing process.
“But you gotta let it run its course,” he said. “It’s not there yet, and we’ve been through this before, more than once and you just gotta let it run its course. We’ve got a pretty detailed plan on how we’ll figure those things out and information that we share with the guys every day, and when it’s the right time, we’ll be ready to pull the trigger.”
