The Houston Astros are looking to cement their rotation and are engaging in trade talks for one of the best starting pitchers available ahead of the trade deadline.

Houston is atop the AL West and has been active ahead of the deadline, cementing its roster. But one area of need is pitching, and Major League Baseball insider Bob Nightengale reported the team is engaged in talks for a starting pitcher.

“The Houston Astros are now engaged in trade discussions with the Miami Marlins for ace Sandy Alcantara after talks with the San Diego Padres for starter Dylan Cease have cooled,” Nightengale wrote on X.

Alcantara is one of the top starting pitchers available and would solidify the Astros’ rotation and be a potential playoff starter for Houston. The right-hander is also under control through the 2026 season and has a $21 million club option in 2027. He’s in the midst of his five-year, $56 million deal with the Marlins.

Alcantara won the NL Cy Young Award in 2022 and is a two-time MLB All-Star. This season, the 29-year-old is 6-9 with a. 6.36 ERA in 21 starts.

Although it’s been a down season, Alcantara has pitched better as of late, as he’s 3-1 with a 5.49 ERA in his last seven starts.

The Astros are currently 62-47 and in first place in the AL West.
