Historic Royal St. George's set to host AIG Women's British Open for first time in 2027

The storied venue has hosted the men's British Open on 15 occasions.

The R&A has announced that the 2027 AIG Women's British Open will be held for the first time at Royal St. George's. The storied venue has hosted the men's British Open on 15 occasions, most recently in 2021 when Collin Morikawa joined a prestigious list that includes Darren Clarke, Greg Norman, Sandy Lyle, Bobby Locke, Henry Cotton, Walter Hagen, Harry Vardon and J.H. Taylor.

Located in Sandwich, Kent, the English club was founded in 1887 by Laidlaw Purves and has hosted a number of elite amateur competitions as well, including the Walker Cup, Curtis Cup, British Amateur Championship and Women’s British Amateur Championship.

“The AIG Women’s Open is a global sporting event and we are committed to giving the best players in the world the best stages on which to compete," Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, said in a statement. "Royal St George’s is one of the world’s great links courses and will provide a fantastic test for the players.

"We look forward to working with AIG to put on a wonderful championship for the fans on the south coast of England in two years’ time.”

The 2026 AIG Women’s British Open will be played July 29-Aug. 2 at Royal Lytham & St Annes. This week's Women's British Open is being contested for the first time at Royal Porthcawl in Wales.
