The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we’re at 38 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we’re taking a look at the history of No. 38 and the players who wore it best.
Current Steelers No. 38 wearer: RB Evan Hull
Evan Hull is the current No. 38 wearer on the Steelers roster. Drafted by the Colts with the 176th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Hull appeared in just two games for Indianapolis before he signed a reserve/future contract with the Steelers this past January. He aims to compete for a spot in Pittsburgh’s restructured RB room this season.
Last five Steelers to wear No. 38:
- Evan Hull, 2025–present
- Terrell Edmunds, 2024
- Mykal Walker, 2023
- John Simon, 2021
- Jaylen Samuels, 2018–2020
Best No. 38 in Steelers history: RB Sidney Thornton
No. 38 doesn’t have the storied Steelers history of other jersey numbers — but the best to ever wear it was RB Sidney Thornton. Drafted by Pittsburgh with the 48th overall pick in the second round of the 1977 NFL Draft, Thornton played primarily in a backup role behind Hall of Fame RB Franco Harris. He accumulated 2,027 yards from scrimmage and 24 total touchdowns across 74 games, winning two Super Bowls with the Steelers. An underrated offensive contributor from the greatest era in franchise history, Thornton holds the top spot at No. 38.
