The Philadelphia Phillies pulled off a massive deal on Wednesday, trading for closer Jhoan Duran. Could a second one be in the works for Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez?
MLB.com senior national reporter Mark Feinsand reports that the Phillies are one of four teams interested in the two-time All-Star slugger.
“Per sources, the Mariners, Cubs, Tigers and Phillies are considered the primary teams in the race for the All-Star third baseman,” Feinsand posted on X.
The market for Eugenio Suárez is beginning to shape up with less than 30 hours until the Trade Deadline. Per sources, the Mariners, Cubs, Tigers and Phillies are considered the primary teams in the race for the All-Star third baseman.

Suarez has 36 home runs and an MLB-leading 87 RBI on the season for the Diamondbacks, who are in fourth place in the National League West with a 51-58 record. He will be a free agent after the season.
The Phillies have desperately needed a right-handed power bat since last trade deadline and Suarez would immediately fill that void. Suarez’s power would create a potent top four in the lineup with Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper.
If Suarez ends up in Philadelphia, he would be the team’s primary designated hitter, while Schwarber would move to left field.
But what would it take to pry Suarez from the Diamondbacks? The Phillies parted with two top-100 prospects in pitcher Mick Abel and catcher Eduardo Tait for Duran, who is under control through 2027. Since Suarez will just be a rental, the Phillies won’t part with top prospects like Andrew Painter, Aidan Miller or Justin Crawford. Would Philadelphia be comfortable moving their No. 5 prospect and MLB.com’s 86th overall in infielder Aroon Escobar for a half-season of Suarez?
After acquiring Duran, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski appears all-in on this trade deadline. The Phillies have one of the best rotations in the game led by Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sanchez. Adding Duran gives Philadelphia the swing-and-miss arm they needed in the bullpen. If they’re able to land a right-handed slugger in Suarez to balance a left-handed heavy lineup, they would be one of the most dangerous teams come October.
