The Milwaukee Brewers are facing a potential season-ending injury decision after a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Right-handed catcher William Contreras is in his third season with the Milwaukee Brewers, who acquired the star in a blockbuster three-team deal that sent Sean Murphy from the Oakland Athletics to the Atlanta Braves in December 2022.
Although Murphy has been solid for Atlanta, Contreras has emerged as an MVP candidate during his time in Milwaukee. He has collected a second All-Star appearance and two Silver Slugger awards with the Brewers while playing the best defense in the league.
Contreras is under team control for two more seasons and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2028.
In 2025, Contreras’s numbers have fallen off significantly from his first two years in Milwaukee. How much of that is due to the fact he is playing this season with a fractured left middle finger is unknown.
On Monday, the Brewers traded infield prospect Jadher Areinamo for right-handed catcher Danny Jansen from the Tampa Bay Rays. Jansen has crushed left-handed pitching this season. Jansen's arrival likely means more days off for Contreras, but not an extended absence.
The organization has said if they were to place Contreras on the injured list, it would be for season-ending surgery.

With Jansen on an expiring contract this season, the Brewers are faced with a decision on what to do at catcher.
If they place Contreras on the injured list, they will be able to assess the value Jansen could bring in a full-time role. In 99 games this year, Contreras is batting .242 — his lowest average since 2021 — and has a .682 OPS, which would be the lowest mark of his career.
