Despite a disappointing loss to the Minnesota Twins, the Boston Red Sox will likely be buyers before the trade deadline as they hold the last Wild Card playoff spot.

Boston dealt with an extremely tough schedule coming out of the All-Star break, playing series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies, but is still in the playoffs with a 57-51 record. With the trade deadline less than a week away, the Red Sox need to make some additions if they truly want to make a run this season.

Boston is reportedly trying to acquire one of the best starting pitchers on the trade market, as The Athletic's Jim Bowden reported that a handful of teams, including the Red Sox, are calling the Twins about ace pitcher Joe Ryan at an "annoying level".

"The Red Sox, (New York Yankees), (Toronto Blue Jays), (Philadelphia Phillies), and (Seattle Mariners) are speed dialing the Twins at an annoying level with continued interest in Joe Ryan, basically their whole bullpen, Willi Castro and Harrison Bader," Bowden said. "Twins could end up being the headliner at the deadline as talks heat up according to sources."

Ryan is in the midst of his best season in the big leagues with a 10-5 record in 21 appearances with a 2.82 ERA and 137 strikeouts. The 29-year-old pitcher was named to his first All-Star game this season and still has two seasons of arbitration eligibility.

The Twins aren't necessarily out of the playoff race, so there's no guarantee that they deal Ryan in the first place. As Boston heads down the stretch, Ryan is the type of pitcher who can make an impact now and in the future. The price tag on the All-Star would likely be high, but it could be worth it for the Red Sox.
