Jets cut one kicker but sign a new one to compete with Harrison Mevis

Nick Folk is back.

The New York Jets are playing some kicker musical chairs.

On Tuesday, they cut kicker Caden Davis. That was to make room for signing veteran kicker Nick Folk.

Folk previously played for the Jets, and now he's a veteran competing with the UFL standout Mevis for the kicking job.

Mevis is a bit of a cult hero, known as the "Thiccer Kicker" for his sturdy lower half and his huge field goals at Missouri.

Folk has been around so long that he played with Jason Taylor on the Jets in 2010. The Jets now have Jason's son Mason on the roster as a rookie tight end.

He'll turn 41 in November.

Folk played for the Titans the past two seasons. He was 21-for-22 on field goals in 2024, and 29-for-30 on field goals in 2023.

That includes a combined 11-for-12 from beyond 50 yards.

Frankly, it seems tough for Folk to lose this competition unless he has really fallen off, because this is a guy who has become almost automatic as his career has gone on.

Mevis is the long-term play, but if the Jets want to win now, Folk might be the best choice to do that.

At the very least, the Jets are continuing to try to solve the kicker position, and that's why they made this pair of moves in late July.
