Zach Evans steps away.
In the middle of the New York Jets' running back roster competition, one back has stepped away from the game.
The Jets have placed Zach Evans on the reserve/retired list.
Evans spent last season on the Jets' practice squad.
The year before, he played in 10 games for the Rams and totaled 19 rushing yards.
The Jets have a lot of RB depth, led by Breece Hall, Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis.
Evans is 24 years old and played his college ball between TCU and Ole Miss.
He was a sixth-round draft choice by the Rams in 2023.

At 5-foot-11, 211 pounds, Evans has always been a sturdy running back.
He starred in his final college season, when he ran for 936 yards and nine touchdowns for Mississippi. He led the SEC with 6.5 yards per carry.
In his college career, Evans averaged an absurd 6.9 yards per touch.
At least for now, though, his football career is over.
Placement on the reserve/retired list means the Jets retain Evans' rights. If he decided to make a comeback at some point, it'd be New York with the first crack at having him on their roster, if they still wanted him.
But that placement, rather than being cut by the Jets, suggests Evans is ready for a new chapter, at least right now.
