William Saliba has given Arsenal fans a reason to smile after revealing that he is hopeful of signing a new long-term contract with the club.
The French centre-back has become the lynchpin of Mikel Arteta’s backline, forming a rock-solid partnership with Brazilian counterpart Gabriel Magalhaes.
However, he has just two years left on his contract, and the Gunners are already locked in talks over a new deal amid concrete interest from Real Madrid.
Speaking after Arsenal’s dramatic 3-2 win over Newcastle United in Singapore, Saliba confirmed discussions are ongoing.
“Yeah, hopefully,” he told The Athletic when asked about a new deal. “Of course, there is nothing now, but there is a good conversation with my agent and the club. Let’s see.”
Arsenal have already agreed new deals for Gabriel and Myles Lewis-Skelly, while an official announcement is expected soon for Ethan Nwaneri.
After bolstering the squad with six new additions, the Gunners are now focused on tying down their key players to long-term deals.
Arsenal have welcomed Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard, and Viktor Gyokeres to the Emirates Stadium.
For Saliba, those additions have boosted the belief that this could be the year Arsenal finally end their Premier League title drought.
“Every year is different,” he said. “We have to learn from the last three seasons. Our mindset is to win the Premier League, and we will give everything from the first game.
“We have a lot of new players and they will hopefully help us to win this league.”
Saliba already knows what Gyokeres brings to the table, having faced him last season while Arsenal battled Sporting CP in the Champions League.
“We know how good he is, how it’s scary to play against him,” Saliba said. “When you face a striker who scores goals, you have to be focused, but now he’s in our team and he will score for us, so that’s good.
“Of course, I’m so happy to have him in my club, and I’m sure that he will help us to win games and win trophies.”
