The Los Angeles Dodgers may still sit atop the NL West, but they have pivotal weaknesses that could derail their chances to repeat as World Series champions.
The Dodgers’ depth is a problem with Max Muncy and Enrique Hernandez on the injured list, and backup infielder Miguel Rojas is struggling to provide a consistent approach at the plate. Their bullpen has not fared much better, entering the week with the seventh-worst ERA (4.43) in the league, and with closer Tanner Scott leading the league in blown saves.
Left field is another area of concern, with Michael Conforto underperforming both at the plate and in the field. Fortunately for the Dodgers, the Minnesota Twins might be a one-stop shop to solve several needs.
According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, a potential trade between the two teams could see the Dodgers receive relief pitchers Jhoan Durán and Griffin Jax, and utility bat Willi Castro, while the Twins acquire an impressive haul including prospects OF Josue De Paula (No. 1 Dodgers prospect), LHP Jackson Ferris (No. 6), RHP Bobby Miller, and OF Jaron Elkins (No. 23).
In 46.1 innings, Durán has a 1.94 ERA and 15 saves and would likely take over closing duties from Scott, while Jax, who has tallied 68 strikeouts in 44 innings, adds depth and another late-inning relief option. Castro, a former All-Star, is having an impressive season with a .257 batting average, 10 home runs, and a 112 OPS+. He can slot in at shortstop, second base, third base, and even replace Conforto in left field.
It is a steep price, but the Dodgers could be getting exactly what they need — an elite bullpen duo and a reliable everyday bat — all under team control through 2027.
