'Amateur hour from Rodri' - how Man City have 'mountain to climb'

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton says Manchester City's Champions League defeat by Bodo/Glimt has given Pep Guardiola "unnecessary stress". "A brilliant night for the people of Bodo and a night where their team thoroughly deserved the victory against the mighty Manchester City," Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton says Manchester City's Champions League defeat by Bodo/Glimt has given Pep Guardiola "unnecessary stress".

City now have work to do next week against Galatasaray to avoid dropping into the play-off places in the league phase.

"A brilliant night for the people of Bodo and a night where their team thoroughly deserved the victory against the mighty Manchester City," Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"Guardiola went with a strong team but they had a plan to deal with it and it worked.

"Clearly, defence is an area where City are lacking. I felt for Max Alleyne, who had a difficult time against Manchester United and was poor for the first two goals against Bodo.

"Of course, no [Ruben] Dias and [Josko] Gvardiol, so they have issues defensively. They have bought in Marc Guehi, who will improve that backline.

"City have problems. They've given themselves a bit of a mountain to climb in terms of qualifying in the top eight and avoiding the play-offs.

"Guardiola already has an injury crisis so they've still got work to do.

"From City's point of view, it is important that they respond against Wolves at the weekend."

Another worry for Guardiola will be the performance of Rodri, who was dismissed for two yellow cards and continues to struggle after his return from a long-term ACL injury.

"It's easy to blame the pitch but, certainly in that second half, he did not look mobile," Sutton added.

"Terrible decision-making from him to pick up his second yellow card within a minute of his first. He wasn't thinking straight.

"He's one of Pep's reliables, somebody he is supposed to trust, but it was amateur hour from Rodri.

"That is a real worry but he isn't the only one who had a poor night.

"They have caused themselves a problem. It was a poor performance, they didn't respond from the Manchester derby defeat, and they've given themselves unnecessary stress."
