ITHACA, N.Y. (WETM) – The best of the best in women’s college hockey took over the region for midweek games.
In a top-20 NCAA Division I clash, #4 Penn State pushed past #12 Cornell 5-1, on Tuesday. The Nittany Lions brought their Olympian filled team to Lynah Rink, earning their 7th ranked win of the season. U.S. Olympian Tessa Janecke opened the scoring in the 1st for Penn State, netting her team-leading 17th goal of the season.
The Big Red answered back in the 2nd, as Shannon Pearson scored to tie the game, just over a minute into the frame. Later in the period, Penn State clawed back to the lead with a goal from Grace Outwater, who deflected in a shot from Maddy Christian. The Nittany Lions roared into the 3rd to close out the victory, with goals by Team Canada national team player Abby Stonehouse, Sophie Morrow, and an empty netter from Christian.
Penn State (22-4), who’s roster also includes national team players, Danica Maynard (Canada) and Taylor Lum (China), will host a series will Delaware which begins Friday, January 23rd at 6 p.m. The Nittany Lions will then host Robert Morris on the following weekend, before sending 3 of their 6 national team players to the Olympics. Freshman Matilde Fantin will join Team Italy, while Nicole Hall will play for Sweden, and Janecke will don the Stars and Stripes in Milan-Cortina.
Olympic women’s hockey action begins on February 5th with the preliminary round. Olympic coverage will be available to watch on WETM-TV and the networks of NBC.
The Big Red will also be represented in the Olympics, with a trio of alumni. Rory Guilday ’25 will play for Team USA, while Brianne Jenner ’15 and Kristin O’Neill ’20 will represent Team Canada.
Cornell (12-8-2) next hits the road for a pair of ranked battles. On Friday, the Big Red travel to take on #7 Princeton at 6 p.m. before a 3 p.m. meeting with #6 Quinnipiac on Saturday.
In Division III, Elmira College played to a 2-2 draw with Hamilton, despite a 1-0 shootout win. The Soaring Eagles responded to a 1-0 deficit in the 3rd, with back-to-back goals from Anna Lugge and Abby Eselunas. Sarah Myziuk knotted the game back up for the Continentals late in the frame, sending the game to overtime. After no scoring in OT, Piper Andrews would add the only goal in the shootout.
