The Patriots traded Joe Milton to the Cowboys to be their second string QB behind Dak Prescott. Milton has now decided to take a shot at the Patriots organization.
The Dallas Cowboys have relied on Dak Prescott as their main quarterback for quite some time, but his occasional struggles with staying healthy prompted the team to trade for second-year QB Joe Milton. Milton is an absolute gunslinger, perfectly suited for a pro-style offense.
“New England is sending QB Joe Milton to the Dallas Cowboys, sources tell ESPN. With Cooper Rush going to Baltimore, Dallas now has a new backup for Dak Prescott,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted.
For now, Milton will serve as the backup, but many believe this trade was made with the intention of eventually grooming him as the future starter.
“The Cowboys are adding Milton to their quarterback room in the hopes of potentially shaping the 25-year-old into a long-term starter,” USA Today’s Jacob Camenker and Nick Brinkerhoff wrote. “Milton's combination of NFL-level success and his overall athletic skill set made him more appealing to teams than many of the mid-round quarterback prospects in this year's draft.”
Since arriving in Dallas, head coach Brian Schottenheimer has had nothing but praise for Milton.
“But from the time he’s been here, the work ethic is incredible. He’s one of the first people in the building. He’s one of the last to leave. The way he’s attacked the playbook and picked it up has been incredible. And it’s been fun for me to watch Dak and Will, but really Dak take a mentorship role with Joe. The talent speaks for itself,” Schottenheimer said.

Milton revealed that he and his team orchestrated the trade. He also made it clear that he enjoys being Dak’s backup, while taking a subtle shot at the Patriots and indirectly at Drake Maye.
“Dak is a great leader,” Milton said. “All respect to him. He literally goes out of his way to help me, no matter if the coach is talking in the meeting, he literally goes out of his way to help. . . . I’ve been in another building. I know how that goes. It’s just very different over here.”
Though he doesn’t name Maye or Jacoby Brissett, they were the quarterbacks ahead of him in New England. Milton is learning a lot from Dak and is eager to improve. Maybe the others weren’t as friendly or willing to mentor. It seems Milton is exactly where he wants to be.
