With the MLB trade deadline coming up in less than a week, the St. Louis Cardinals lone All-Star in 2025 could be on the verge of getting moved to an NL contender.
The St. Louis Cardinals have been slumping in July, having a record of 7-12 since the start of the month.
St. Louis is still keeping up with the run for their money in the NL Wild Card race, being just 1.5 games behind the San Diego Padres for the final spot entering Saturday. This still isn't keeping the Cardinals from showing that they are willing to sell before the MLB trade deadline.
Reports believe that multiple Cardinals' players are on the trade block, including closer Ryan Helsley, as well as two of their top players in third baseman Nolan Arenado and starting pitcher Sonny Gray.
Arenado and Gray will be difficult to move as they both hold no-trade clauses in their contracts. Still, another top player this season has emerged as a target for the Los Angeles Dodgers – utility man Brendan Donovan.
The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya wrote in an article on Saturday. saying that the Dodgers are having a lot of trade talks, targeting multiple positions, but Brendan Donovan is one of them.
"The Dodgers have shot high so far in the market, expressing interest in St. Louis Cardinals All-Star Brendan Donovan, multiple league sources said."
"Still, the club’s interest doesn’t mean a deal is necessarily likely... The club has also been reluctant to include either of its top young position players — catcher Dalton Rushing and shortstop Alex Freeland — in potential deals," Ardaya said.
Donovan, 28, earned his first All-Star bid this season. He was the only Cardinals player who was selected to the game.
In his fourth season in the big leagues, Donovan has been a consistent contact hitter who's also played games in the outfield and infield for the Cardinals.
