Was there an agreement behind Díaz’s missed penalty? Senegal star breaks his silence
Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has firmly denied rumours of any agreement with Morocco after Brahim Díaz missed late penalty in AFCON 2025 final.
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time on Sunday when Díaz stepped up with Morocco chasing historic title on home soil.
The midfielder opted for Panenka style penalty but his effort floated straight into Mendy’s hands keeping the score level before Senegal went on to lift the trophy in extra time.
In the aftermath speculation spread suggesting understanding between the two side following the chaotic sequence that preceded the penalty including Senegal’s brief protest after the VAR decision.
"
Mendy rejected the idea outright:
“No ,, of course not. We have to be serious” the goalkeeper told Marca. “Do you really think that with one minute left and with country that has been waiting 50 year for a title, we could reach agreement? He wanted to score... that’s all”
The Senegal keeper also claimed his share of credit for the save:
“He wanted to score and I stopped him. That’s football”
Mendy now with Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia, said Senegal’s resilience defined their triumph:
“We came back together and we won together .. That’s all that matters. We can be proud” He concluded..
"
With that victory Senegal secured their second African Cup of Nations title leaving Morocco waiting to repeat the continental glory they had previously achieved in 1976.
