After playing for Team USA for 14 seasons and becoming a three-time gold medalist, former NBA All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony is showing his support for Qatar.

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) confirmed the country’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, according to a report published by The Athletic. The Qatari committee has engaged in ongoing discussions with the International Olympic Committee as a part of an election process after hosting the men’s 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“Let’s go #visitQatar,” Anthony posted on his Instagram story Thursday to congratulate Qatar on its bid.

Furthermore, Qatar is also scheduled to host the 2027 FIBA World Cup, which Anthony is a big supporter of after being named the FIBA Global Ambassador in February 2023. He had previously expressed his support for the country during a live panel discussion

“I love it,” he said. “It’s fun being over there and being able to pick the country. To see a whole new place, and to me that’s exciting.”

Anthony also participated in the draw that decided which nations would compete in the 2027 FIBA World Cup. If Qatar’s Olympic bid is successful, the event will be hosted in the capital city of Doha, which would become the first Middle Eastern city to host the Games.

However, Qatar is not alone in its quest to host the Olympics. Indonesia, Turkey, India and Chile have also sent in bids. The next Summer Games in 2028 are scheduled to take place in Los Angeles.
