Brandon Holmes had to do extra damage to earn stoppage
Brandon Holmes should have been celebrating a highlight-reel slam knockout, but instead he left his latest win slightly confused.
At Fury FC 113 in Houston on Sunday, Holmes took on the undefeated Preston LaGrange in a middleweight contest. LaGrange looked to have Holmes in trouble with a triangle choke from bottom position, but Holmes took him for a ride, picking him up high off the mat and slamming him down hard.
Though the maneuver didn’t knock LaGrange out cold, he was visibly hurt and disoriented. Commentators Alex Morono and Michael Alexander immediately declared LaGrange to be knocked out, but referee Danielle Guevara didn’t step in for the stoppage.

Holmes continued to batter the dazed Holmes with ground-and-pound, imploring Guevara to stop the fight, which she eventually did at the 3:13 mark of Round 1.
Morono was highly critical of Guevara, shouting, “Ref, what are you doing? The slam knocked him out?”
Alexander added, “I don’t think he’s awake yet,” and commentator Raheel Ramzanali said, “This was over a long time ago.”
The commentators continued to criticize the handling of finish, with Morono questioning why the officials entering the cage weren’t helping Holmes to get to his stool, instead allowing him to attempt to stand on his own power.
With the win, Holmes rebounded from a disappointing loss to Cam Rowston in his Contender Series tryout this past August and improves to 6-1 as a pro.
