Over the past few years, since Major League Baseball added the third Wild Card spot, buyers have become more prevalent. For teams like the Boston Red Sox, there's reason to believe that it could hurt and help them.

Ultimately, the expectation around the league is for the Red Sox to buy some, but there's also a scenario where they could sell. Moving someone like Jarren Duran makes plenty of sense right now, especially if the plan is to have their young players get full-time at-bats, or at least hope they do so in the future.

According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, this could prompt the Red Sox to sell here and there, noting that with the current market as it stands, this is the perfect opportunity for a team to jump in as a seller.

Boston Red Sox Chief of Baseball Operations Craig Breslow has refused to commit to buying or selling at the MLB trade deadline, even as veterans like Kenley Jansen seek to compete for a championship.

“Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has said the team wants to add after trading (Rafael) Devers, and while it would surprise no one if they did, Boston is an organization that deeply values operating efficiently, and a market like this is the epitome of inefficient,” Passan wrote. “Holding now would speak to the Red Sox’s comfort with their current roster and the exceptional price to bolster it.”

Now, it's very possible that the Red Sox could move on from someone like Duran and get a great package in return, while also trying to make some under-the-radar type of moves to help their chances of making the playoffs in the second half.

The Red Sox are 54-49, and while they have moments where they look to be one of the better teams in baseball, for the most part, this has been a .500 ballclub over the past few years.
