Chelsea got the job done against Brentford last night – two goals and a clean sheet. But it wasn’t a great game in an attacking sense. The Brentford made it a battle, and we won the battle, but it wasn’t pretty.
Captain Reece James acknowledged that in his comments after the game.

“We know we needed to win at home. It probably wasn’t our best game on the ball, but to build something special, you need to win games when you’re not at your best,” James said in quotes picked up by the Chelsea official website.
“We’ve only had a short period with the manager – and some of us have been out and only had a few sessions with him. We’re trying to learn as much as possible in a short period of time, and we’re adapting to the way he wants to play.
“Things take time, and every manager has a different style, a different approach. In this moment during the season, it’s so hard to train because there is a game every two or three days. We just need to prepare the best we can.”
James is usually one of our most creative players, but Brentford made it hard for everyone yesterday. He should now get a game off in midweek and can hopefully provide something more when we face Crystal Palace at the weekend.
In other news…
Joao Pedro was hardly spectacular yesterday, but he did note one thing his team had done really well against Brentford which helped bring them a win.
Chelsea’s struggles to establish a really solid and reliable centre back pairing have been at the heart of their issues in the last few years. They might be about to add yet another option.
