Wrexham's storyboard march up the English footballing ladder has been stripped of one of its most influential characters as veteran full-back James McClean departs the club by mutual consent.
The 36-year-old former Republic of Ireland international and Premier League stalwart helped the Red Dragons to back-to-back promotions while donning the armband at the Racecourse Ground, and now returns to Derry City as his career comes full circle.
McClean made 108 appearances for Wrexham while scoring eight goals since signing in 2023, quickly establishing himself as a household name for the club.
"
Manager Phil Parkinson said: “I had a good chat with Jimmy last week."
"The time is right for him and his family. He always wanted to settle back in his hometown, and he has the opportunity to finish his career there."
“He’s been a great servant to the Club, and we’ve really enjoyed working with him."
"He’s been an important player over the last few years for us, with his drive, determination, mentality, and his professionalism, and we wish him and his family all the best.”
Across a long career, McClean also featured for his country on 103 occasions while scoring 11 goals along the way.
