Yankees announce Ryan McMahon's jersey number, which has an epic historical tie-in

It can be tough to find an available jersey number with the New York Yankees.

So many digits are retired for some of the all-time greats of the game.

Ryan McMahon is the newest Yankee, after being acquired via trade with the Colorado Rockies on Friday. And he needs a number on the back of his uniform.

He wore No. 24 in Colorado, but that's taken by Jasson Dominguez on the current roster.

McMahon will instead wear No. 19, according to The Athletic.

There's an incredible historical tie-in for McMahon that might be a good omen here.

His current manager, Aaron Boone, wore No. 19 for the Yankees in 2003. That's the year he hit the epic ALCS walk-off home run against the Boston Red Sox in Game 7.

The most recent No. 19 was Pablo Reyes, who wore it earlier this year.

Masahiro Tanaka and Dave Righetti are two of the most notable 19s in Yankees history. Whitey Ford wore the number, too, but only for a single season.

Memorable names like Kevin Cash, Bubba Crosby, Luis Sojo and old-timers like Cuddles Marshall, Hersh Martin and Jumbo Brown also donned the digits.

And now, 19 belongs to McMahon.
