Not later, but now
Chelsea are apparently ready to do something for Liam Rosenior that we weren’t willing to do for his predecessor, and try to sign a new defender before the end of the January transfer window!
The club refused to acquiesce to Enzo Maresca’s demand for a new signing at the position in the summer, and evidently weren’t willing to revisit the issue until after the end of the season. But according to The Telegraph, we are now “ready to make a move for a new defender in the remaining weeks of the January transfer window” to support Rosenior. Sorry (not sorry?), Enzo!
That said, don’t get your hopes up for a grizzled, highly experienced veteran who could help whip this random collection of potentials into some sort of proper team shape. The report names Jérémy Jacquet and Jacobo Ramón as two possible targets, aged 20 and 21, respectively, and with a combined 1 full top flight season and 53 senior professional appearances between the two of them. Jacquet came up through the Stade Rennais academy and is currently starting for their first-team while Ramón is playing for Cesc Fàbregas’s Como side after leaving Real Madrid in search of opportunities last summer.
Rosenior, fresh off of his cringy “manage is man-age: aging men” comment, was asked in Thursday’s press conference about potential signings this month, and he gave an entirely non-committal answer.
“If we do, it needs to be the right player. We need to be patient. I want to assess this group. It’s really, really important to me. I like to give the players I work with a chance to show good surprises. We still have time. We have conversations every day, myself and the board, about potential transfers, both out and in, but at the same time, I need to focus on the players in the building. If I feel it’s the right time or the right player, then we’ll make that decision.”

Get ready to “age more men” then, Liam.
