The Australian Open’s One-Point Slam marked an overwhelming success.
In fact, people are now calling for it to be implemented across all Grand Slam events, such was the enjoyment experienced by fans and players alike.
A unique format that pitted professionals against amateurs, with a few celebrities thrown in for good measure, they were all united by the quest for $1m.
In the end, it was Jordan Smith who came out on top, having since been celebrated by the likes of Coco Gauff, Carlos Alcaraz and Roger Federer.
However, it’s the money that he will be most grateful for, and we now know what he plans to do with it.
How Jordan Smith reacted to winning the Australian Open’s One-Point Slam
Naturally, the Aussie was shell-shocked after what he had just achieved.
Following just a handful of points on court, he was a millionaire, and rightly stumbled to claim: “I can’t speak. It’s unbelievable.”
However, when asked what he planned to do with his newfound riches, his answer was simple, stating that he and his girlfriend would now look to buy a house.
Alcaraz, the world number one, was a willing participant and an animated figure on the sidelines after his elimination.
He spoke about the nerves of the event: “It feels a little like I’m playing a Grand Slam final right now.”
Jannik Sinner, who Smith beat on his way to the title, added: “You cannot imagine my heartbeat right now – I reckon it’s about 200 bpm!”
Who else took part in the One-Point Slam?
Whilst Alcaraz and Sinner were two of the biggest draws for the One-Point Slam, there was actually a whole host of superstars present, from professional tennis players to celebrities.
On the women’s side, the likes of Amanda Anisimova, Naomi Osaka, Iga Swiatek and Gauff all took part, whilst Nick Kyrgios, Frances Tiafoe and Daniil Medvedev also suffered early defeats.
Smith marks the first amateur player to emerge victorious from this event, in what was its second iteration.
Some of the celebrities involved included Australian football star Bailey Smith, singer-songwriter Jay Chou and Twitch streamer Loserfruit.
